Engagements + a Family

For this photoshoot I couldn't help but think about my art & design students. We have a class of 5 of our most experienced students who just finished their final class (at least until we finish our preparations for our artificial lighting class). They have learned a whole lot of things, from White Balance, to exposure, to proper lighting techniques. I imagined them sitting there watching me and anytime I was tempted to do something lazy and have a "I'll just photoshop it later" moment, they would yell "shoot it right in camera!" They are at the point now where they can find all the little flaws in my photos and tell me how to improve on them. So......to my 5 students. Congrats to you! You are photographers now! To you and all the rest of my students, I invite you now to comment on the photos and tell me what design and/or other photography principals are being used in each of these photos, as well as offer honest critiques. Have at it! (I do reserve the right to remove your comment and/or my photo if it makes me look like anything less than "the man" :).

Special thanks to Jonathan Canlas for his inspiration in the next few pics.

Equipment used: canon 5d, 40d, 24-70mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, interfit battery powered lights, one faithful reflector, and one great assistant!

Wedding season is upon us...

Moving to a new area has its excitements and challenges. Since last July we have had a lot of fun with brides, seniors, families and newborns here in Oklahoma. We love it here.

With 4 weddings in the next 30 days, and my big belly, I think back to when Dustin started shooting with me. Never would I have realized just how grateful i would be for his contributions to our photography business. Not only did he tackle all the mysteries of starting our business, which he maintains and improves with his innovation, but he is an excellent photographer and teacher. We love teaching our classes, and meeting with clients. Shooting is always fun (even in this hot hot weather) because we have such fun people to work with. The coolest people find us to photograph them.

So right now Dustin's off on a session while I get to spend the evening building towers and reading books with my son. What a great gift to each other that we can share these talents and be partners. Tomorrow I get to shoot a lovely wedding which I am excited for. Being business partners with your spouse is just the best, and is so much easier to share the load.

So a word of advice for upcoming photographers? Teach your spouse. You'll always have something to talk about, and the pressures of the business are much easier to bear. ;)

But those of you who don't have a spouse photographer (especially with little ones at home) how do you do it? What works for you? Share your thoughts for others to learn from too!

One more! Gotta love it.

Kids say it all. How do YOU feel about getting pictures taken?

Family Session: Bui Family

This adorable family was so much fun on Saturday. The little guys were quite the troopers too. Great job, friends! This family won some studio credit at an elementary school, and it was the perfect excuse to get out and get pictures taken! OU campus is beautiful this time of year-- go take a visit!

Family Session: Courtney Jack

I got to meet this adorable family during my stay in upstate NY. Courtney and I graduated together almost 10 years ago (sad how fast time flies!!), and it was so fun to see her again. Her little guy is only slightly older than my own. He was such a trooper, and a bundle of fun. He put up with the chilly weather, and we got some fun shots. Here are the ones Courtney ordered prints of-- i loved her choices!

Where have WE been?

So... what on earth have we been doing for the last month?

  • Traveling back from NY.
  • Newborn shoots.
  • Senior shoots.
  • Fun family shoots.
  • Amber's belly getting bigger.
  • Our son turned 2. Blast of a party.
  • Our 3rd anniversary.
  • Dustin's license expired, so I've turned chauffeur. Highly don't recommend letting that happen. Renewal is so much easier.
  • Having tons of fun with our photography classes. Looking forward to a great summer. We'll open more classes on demand. Sign up here.
  • Our first Tornado warning-- took shelter in the bathroom tub. Did anyone have any damage?
Sorry for the lack of posting. I promise we'll be better now! Hope your week is starting out great!!
