Temples in HDR

About two years ago I went on an HDR kick...........and failed. Miserably! I just wasn't getting it and the pictures weren't that impressive. But I recently rediscovered HDR and am loving it. Special thanks to photomatix for watermarking all my images :) Anyhow....here's some pictures of temples. The blue one is where Amber and I were married. Pretty neat look eh?

Andrew's Seniors

I'll always be grateful for clients that are patient with me. I get bored easily and unless I'm doing something different, I will drive myself crazy. So thanks Andrew for letting me do some experimentation here and there. Hope you like em!

Special thanks to Bryan Niven, who's photography is truly amazing and unique.....the only man in the world who does what he does as well as he does. He was my inspiration for the following shot.

Family Session Sneak Peak: Cam

Today I had an awesome family session today in Fairport with Courtney and her cute guys. We had a blast, and I loved how this little guy warmed up to me. He's just a little older than our little guy. He even gave me a chocolate teddy graham bear at the end of our session! Score! There will be more to come, but i just wanted to say thanks to these friends for a fun time!

Chillin with ny fam

The munchkin and I have had a great time chillin at the parent's house in ny. Less than a week left of our vacation. We've had lots of fun, and he's starting to remember who everyone is, and connecting names. We look forward to seeing daddy next week-- he'll be so happy to have us home! But it's been really fun.

And now a time for photoshop... :)

I still firmly believe in shooting things right the first time.....but there's still a lot of fun to be had in photoshop :) Thanks to Amanda....an awesome model and soon-to-be graduate! Thanks for being willing to try out all my crazy ideas. They worked!

Gotta love panos:)

And special thanks to the people of school house cycles for letting us use their made-for-photography wall.
Believe it or not, this last shot was done indoors....the one chance we get to be shielded from the wind, we created it instead. Thanks to Matt my assistant for operating the loud leaf blower.

A Time for Honesty

I have recently been thinking a lot about the role of photoshop in digital photography. This question keeps popping into my mind: Has photoshop made us all better photographers? And always the follow-up question: CAN photoshop make us better photographers?

I think I have recently fallen into the trap of having a "save the rest for photoshop" vision about my photos I am creating. I think in some ways that's limiting, because I'm not thinking about how I can make the photo incredible NOW....rather I am thinking about later. A later that often never comes because I may lose or forget that vision, run out of time, run out of motivation, or the client may not even pick that series to print. I think photoshop can make us better photographers if we invest all of our inspiration, creativity, and technicality AS we shoot in such a way that we will deceive others into believing that our images are photoshopped.

With that said, I had a fun photoshoot and shot better than I've shot for a long time because I was determined to make everything LOOK photoshopped without any intervention by adobe. It's certainly the beginning of a new challenge, but I think it's a good start. The images below are strait out of camera....no color adjustments, no exposure corrections, no lightroom presets. I was even tempted to convert one image to black and white. But instead, I will expose myself as a photographer, not as a photoshopper.

I will say, these are the most photographed candles in history....they are used as subjects in every single photography class we teach. Every one of our students has taken pictures of these candles.

Although my life currently is most consumed with photography as the medium of creation, for most of my life I have been a student of the Visual Arts. I especially loved painting, and drawing. I stumbled across this children's book illustrator and i love her style. I was doubly surprised to read about her medium is Photoshop! She has a drawing tablet and stylus, but i am just fascinated by what she can create. Someday i want to do more drawing... maybe even a children's book. We'll see what i can do. Check out this talented artist here!

Smile Smile Smile!

We found this one brooke's blog, who is a former student of ours, and we had to share it. I'll quote from her, cause it pretty much sums up what I think about it!

"I’m totally in love with this short film! I love it from a photographers standpoint–in which it reveals some hidden secrets of capturing natural images of people–but I’m also in love with it from a humanist standpoint…the absolute influence we as individuals can have on the lives of those around us! Please enjoy! I smile and even get a little teary eyed every time!"
